It feels like fall, but I know in my heart that is truly is winter now. My family back in Canada is switching to winter tires and going sledding, so I guess winter has finally begun. Meanwhile here, the leaves are just changing and it’s just starting to dip below freezing.
But I’m ready for winter. I love it. I love it more now that I don’t live in a place that has 5 feet of snow and consistently freezing temperatures. Winter in New Mexico has been my favourite winter of anywhere that I have lived. It’s not stupid cold, but it’s also cold enough to bundle up. So for the coming of the new season, I’ve come up with 10 more things that make me happy.
1. Warm Drinks
If I was any other girl, I would probably have exchanged Warm Drinks for Pumpkin Spice Latte. Unfortunately, I don’t like pumpkin. I know, I know. It’s like I’m not a white girl. But I do looooove warm drinks. Coffee, hot chocolate, apple cider. On those cold evenings, when I’m chilled to the bone, nothing warms me up like those drinks. Plus! You can drink out of them out of super cute mugs! There are about a million cute mugs online, I’m sure you own some. This year lets put them to good use!
2. Dressing In Layers
I love winter clothes. I love how warm they are, how cute they can be and how good I look in them. Jk!
This year I’ve decided to participate in Dressember. I’m going to be wearing a dress every day for the month of December in an effort to raise money to end modern slavery. In my opinion, wearing a dress every day is such a small sacrifice to help with such a huge issue. If you are interested in donating or learning more, look here.
Half the reason that I started crocheting was just to keep warm! When your fingers are freezing, there is nothing that feels better than warm yarn slipping through your fingers. There always seem to be more time during the winter for crocheting, it gets my creative juices flowing and I can create more pieces during this time. I can’t wait to get started!
4. Hearty Meals
No more salads for me! I’m all about the soup, stews, casseroles and roasts. The more potatoes, the better.
I mean, do I need to say anymore? No more shorts, I’m about sweatpants all. day. long.
6. Using Our New Wood Burning Stove
Remember when we cut down some wood? It was for our wood burning stove. I can’t wait to use it. We had a gas fireplace in our last apartment, but it’s so much better to burn real wood. Especially wood I cut down myself. It will feel so cozy and fulfilling to burn that wood.
Our new house has hardwood floors, which are just lovely, but they are COLD! I have slippers on when I wake up in the morning until I go to bed. I have bad circulation in my feet, my theory is because they’ve been frozen so many times growing up, so now I just love slippers. They are the only way my feet are warm. If I’m not in slippers, you will usually find me with at least 2 pairs of socks on.
Anyone who knew me growing up would be surprised to hear that I actually like snow. I hated it growing up, but I love it now. I love it now that it’s rare, and it’s not a constant all winter long. I love how pretty the snow is when it first falls, and I love how it leaves footprints when you walk on it. I’ve grown to appreciate snowflake decorations more as I get older
I know that because I’m Canadian I’m automatically supposed to adore hockey. I did like hockey, but never to the same extent as when I got married. Husband is enthralled with hockey. He would watch it every night if we could. He knows all the player’s names, and the main ones he can tell you the stats on. He’s in three fantasy hockey leagues and he’s a commissioner in one of them. I’ve come to appreciate it a lot more now that we’re married, and I am starting to understand the strategy behind it.
10. Christmas is Coming
Now that Halloween is done, we can start to focus on Christmas! And I love Christmas! Mostly because I like presents. I’m like a 4 year old that never fully grew up. I remember waiting all day to open my presents in the evening on Christmas, and I was jittery all day waiting to open presents. Nothing has really changed now that I’m older. I love giving presents and getting them.
What makes you happy about winter?
