On our very worst days, I will look at my husband and ask him “What are you thankful for?”
This is to give us perspective. We have so many things to be thankful for, yet I often find myself focusing on the negative. Sometimes, life doesn’t go as planned and it seems like everything is falling apart but that doesn’t mean that we don’t have positive aspects of our lives. When we change our perspective and see some of the positive aspects of our lives, the negative things don’t seem so bad.
When things aren’t going our way, it feels like the last thing that we want to do is look at the positive. It’s much easier and appears that it would be so much more fulfilling to just spiral in our self-pity and focus on the negative. NO.
It may seem like the best idea at the time, but it’s not going to make us feel any better.
Ultimately, self pity isn’t going to get us anywhere
But remembering all the blessings in your life and all the things that you have to be thankful for will probably give you some better perspective and peace of mind. It won’t solve your problems, but it may make them not seem so bad. They might even become manageable.
I often forget, but I want to get into a better habit of daily saying something that I am thankful for. I had a notebook in high school where I wrote down each day what I was thankful for. I found this incredibly useful. At the beginning, I would say that I was thankful for the big things in my life, like my family and my home, but eventually, it came down to what happened that day that I was thankful for. One time, I was thankful that a Walmart greeter was willing to give me and my friend those smile stickers. On the really bad days, you may need to get creative to remember what is good in your life. Did your coffee have the perfect amount of cream in it? Did someone listen to your problems?
If you think hard enough, you will be able to find at least one good thing that happened that day. When you look back at the day, you can replay all the good things that happened and pick the very best one. This is the perfect way to end the day since you are focused on the positive.
So I think it’s important to have an Attitude of Gratitude (plus, it’s really fun to say). Being thankful isn’t just for Thanksgiving anymore y’all!
The Bible talks a lot about being thankful, and I think that this is really for our own good. We have so much to be thankful for and so many good things in our lives, we just need to remember them!
I’m going to try to post on Twitter on the regular about what I’m thankful for with #AttitudeofGratitude. Join me!
What are you thankful for? Do you find that remembering what you’re thankful for helps you to stay focused on the positive?
